Established in 1992, The Gahar Mahila Handloom Handicraft Weavers is a community-driven enterprise with over 500 members, 90% of whom are women. The organization is focused on preserving the traditional handloom and handicraft techniques of the Kullu region, while fostering sustainable practices and economic growth for local artisans, weavers, and fiber growers. By combining tradition with modern innovation, Gahar Mahila Handloom Handicraft Weavers has grown into a leading player in the regional handloom industry, known for high-quality products and a commitment to empowering its members.
The Kullu Shawl, granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2004 by the Government of India, is a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of the Kullu Valley. The GI tag recognizes and protects the traditional craftsmanship and geographical uniqueness associated with the production of these shawls, ensuring authenticity and safeguarding the interests of local artisans.
Handwoven by skilled artisans in the Kullu Valley, Kullu Shawls are renowned for their intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and designs inspired by local tribal culture, flora, and fauna.
These shawls are made from natural fibers such as wool, pashmina, and angora, often using organic processes and vegetable dyes.
The GI tag ensures that only shawls made in the Kullu region using traditional methods can be marketed as "Kullu Shawls," protecting local weavers from imitation products and preserving cultural heritage.
The Gahar Mahila Handloom Handicraft Weavers is committed to preserving Kullu’s rich cultural heritage through sustainable, eco-friendly handloom and handicraft production. Our goal is to empower local artisans and fiber growers by providing them with a platform for collaboration, skill development, and access to markets, both domestic and international. We focus on collective growth, tradition and innovation, ensuring that every member prospers.
Our approach prioritizes environmentally sustainable practices in every aspect of production.
We empower female artisans, giving them a sense of ownership and an active role in the decision-making process.
We are dedicated to keeping traditional crafts relevant in modern markets while safeguarding Kullu’s cultural heritage.
